Church Hall Design

Located in inner Sydney, Lockhart-Krause's reworking of an existing church hall breathes new life into a long-standing institution, reshaping how it serves its community. The design creates a new function room, which can be rented out to generate revenue supporting the church's community outreach programs. The project focused on internal reorganisation, including the addition of new offices and flexible meeting rooms to host community education programs. A pitched roof was added to the facade to continue the rhythm of the surrounding streetscape. This design was completed pro-bono.

A Contemporary Response Rooted in Context

Contemporary Church Hall Design | Lockhart-Krause Architects

Respecting both the original building and its urban context, the architectural strategy is grounded in continuity. The roofline responds directly to neighbouring forms, creating a visual flow that anchors the hall within the streetscape while offering a subtle moment of architectural punctuation. The exterior is defined by a playful, varied brick façade, with its textured surface providing depth, shadow and contrast. This material selection speaks to permanence, history and tactility, qualities integral to a thoughtful and enduring church hall design.

Function-Led Planning for Community Use

Internally, the renovation enhances functionality without disrupting the hall’s existing character. The new layout includes dedicated spaces for community-focused activities – from education and counselling to group meetings and informal gatherings. The space was made more accessible by including ramps and limiting stairs, catering to all users participating in community programs. Offices and storage areas have been integrated with restraint, ensuring they support rather than overpower the hall’s core spatial volume.

Architecture That Supports Participation

The modern church hall is increasingly a space of interaction and support, rather than solely a place of worship. Welcoming materiality and private spaces for community meetings foster a sense of protection and comfort. As a contemporary approach to church hall design, it honours tradition and creates a safe place for the community.

A Lasting Contribution to the Urban Fabric

Through a considered architectural language and a deep understanding of the site's civic role, Lockhart-Krause Architects has expanded the church’s role into a gathering place, an educational space, and a refuge. The project offers a dignified yet open presence in the streetscape, reflecting the values of the community it serves.
