Developing within the remote Cradle Mountain region presented a host of unique challenges. Extreme weather conditions — from biting cold and high winds to significant rainfall — demanded robust materiality and sheltered, resilient spaces. Sensitive ecological considerations and limited access to essential services further shaped our approach. Through meticulous site analysis, Lockhart-Krause Architects harnessed natural light and maximised sweeping views, all while minimising the project’s ecological footprint.
The design of Cradle Mountain Accommodation speaks to a commitment to both sustainability and refined living. Thick, rammed‑earth walls provide exceptional thermal insulation, creating interiors that remain invitingly warm in winter and cool in summer. Deep openings allow daylight to gracefully filter through, softening the robust palette of timber flooring and earth‑toned interiors.
“Every material choice was made with a deep respect for the land,” explains Jesse Lockhart-Krause, Director at LKA. “We wanted to create spaces that both withstand the elements and enhance the natural beauty of the region.”
Each private unit is conceived as a haven of seclusion, yet together they form a cohesive narrative that ties the entire site to its surroundings. The dining pavilion emerges as a communal gathering space, perfectly framing the sweeping mountain vistas and celebrating locally sourced cuisine in a setting that is as much about connection as it is about comfort.
