UTS Power Systems Lab Fitout: A Collaborative Educational Hub

Lockhart-Krause Architects worked closely with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) to deliver a teaching space that meets the complex needs of a large and diverse stakeholder group. This project encompassed a wide range of users — including facilities management, capital works, property management, workplace safety teams, teaching staff, and students — each bringing essential perspectives and detailed requirements. Through fortnightly meetings with the architect and project manager, Lockhart-Krause Architects ensured the final design aligned seamlessly with the needs and expectations of every stakeholder.

UTS Power Systems Lab Fitout – Collaborative Educational Hub

A Purpose-Built Learning Environment

The teaching space was carefully designed to address both the immediate and long-term needs of UTS’s School of Electrical and Data Engineering. The layout prioritises functionality, clear view lines, circulation, and access for all users — including improved disabled access. Specialist joinery, including new AV equipment, teaching projectors, and data and power integration, was meticulously planned and incorporated into the classroom environment. A new power rail allows for flexible and reliable power and data access, supporting diverse teaching and learning needs.

Supporting Practical, Hands-On Learning

At the heart of this project was the integration of specialized power modules that simulate real-world energy demands. These modules are crucial for the enhanced quality of the renewable energy engineering and power engineering courses at UTS. The new teaching space intertwines theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring students gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals of power and renewable energy engineering while also learning how these principles apply to real-world systems.

The design supports hands-on experimental learning by providing direct access to equipment and hardware that students will encounter in their professional fields. The result is a dynamic, adaptable learning environment that enhances the quality of teaching and fosters deeper student engagement.

Sustainability and Cost-Effective Solutions

Aligning with UTS’s commitment to sustainability, the project reuses and optimises existing furniture, cupboards, storage, and desks wherever possible. This approach reduces costs, minimises waste, and ensures resources are used responsibly, while still achieving a cohesive and functional final design.

The UTS Power Systems Lab fitout navigates complex stakeholder needs and delivers a high-performing educational environment, enriching the student experience.
